Biography
David Spiegel, M.D. practices pediatric orthopaedics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Spiegel attended Duke University for college, medical school, and residency. Following his schooling at Duke, Dr. Spiegel completed research and clinical fellowships in pediatric orthopaedics at CHOP. He serves as a consultant in orthopaedic surgery at the Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre for Disabled Children in Banepa, Nepal, where he has made numerous trips for up to 6 months at a time. He has been involved with Health Volunteers Overseas since 1997, where he has volunteered, served as program director in Nepal, and been a member of the Orthopaedics Overseas Board of Directors.
 
Besides his work with Orthopaedics Overseas, Dr. Spiegel has served as the Chairman of several committees of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, namely the Committee for Children’s Orthopaedics in Underdeveloped Regions and the Bone & Joint Decade Committee. He has been involved with World Health Organization’s Global Initiative for Emergency & Essential Surgical Care, and has served as a consultant for the World Health Organization. He serves on the board of both the Ponseti International Association and Miracle Feet.
 
He received the President’s Call To Service Award in 2006 by the President’s Council on Service & Civic Participation for contributing over 4,000 hours to volunteer service to improving global health, and also received the Golden Apple Award by Health Volunteers Overseas in 2009.
