Biography
Michael D. Sussman, M.D. is an Orthopaedic Surgeon on staff at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland, Oregon. Prior to coming to Portland, Dr. Sussman was on the faculty of the University of Virginia, and at the time of his departure in 1992, he was the Director of the Division of Children Orthopaedics and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was Chief of Staff at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland from 1992 to 1999.
Michael has been a member of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and received the Arthur H. Heuhne Award for lifetime contributions to Pediatric Orthopaedics in 2000. In addition, he has been a member of American Academy of Cerebral Palsy & Developmental Medicine (AACPDM) throughout most of his career and was President of the organization from 2000 to 2001.
Dr. Sussman provides care in all aspects of Pediatric Orthopaedics, but has a particular interest in Neuromuscular Diseases, including Cerebral Palsy as well as the progressive Neuromuscular Diseases such as Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, etc. He has also had a commitment to teaching of residents and fellows, and has been involved in clinical research, co-authoring many clinical research publications. Michael has been author and co-author of many scholarly publications and chapters and edited the book “The Diplegic Child”, which was the result of a seminar sponsored by the American Academy Of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and Shriners Hospitals for Children in 1991.
Michael also has an interest in International Pediatric Orthopedics and is a member of the European Pediatric Orthopaedic Society (EPOS). In addition, he has been involved in the development of a series of meetings focused on the area of Cerebral Palsy, in association with the AACPDM, known as the Eastern European and Mediterranean Congress of Cerebral Palsy & Developmental Medicine. To date, meetings have been held in Istanbul, Turkey, Santorini, Greece, and most recently, Warsaw, Poland. The next meeting is planned for Eilat, Israel in 2008. He is also a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics A & B and a Consultant Reviewer for the Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and Developmental Medicine Child Neurology.
