From the Introduction: Health has always been a basic human need. Today, as at every earlier period, people need to know how to care for mothers in pregnancy and childbirth and for young children as they grow up. They need to know how to live a healthy life and how to deal with accidents like broken bones. They need to know how to help and reassure the sick and to prevent or cure diseases. They need to know how to look after the old and the dying. ‘Medicine Through Time’ is the story of how people tackled these problems, and how new methods and ideas for dealing with them developed and spread from one area of the world to another.
